Reproductive Rights

Women's Reproductive Rights

I support women's reproductive rights, including the right to preventative options and family planning options. Regardless of a person's position on contraception and choice, I think that we can all agree that the ultimate goal is to ensure that all children are wanted children. I want to create an environment in which abortion is the last option in a list of responsible choices. I believe it is long past time that all women have equal and open access to the information and services they need to make conscientious, safe and responsible choices about sex and reproduction.

While women still enjoy the freedoms established in Roe v. Wade, those rights are under continuous assault from anti-choice forces in Congress. They have tried to criminalize abortion aid to minors and limit minors' access to contraception. They have tried banning certain preventative prescription drugs. They have banned federal funding for abortions and denied federal employees coverage for abortions. It's interesting to see just how far some are willing to go to limit a woman's reproductive choice. I will continue to fight these forces, to ensure women's reproductive rights are secure.

109th Legislation

  • Introduced the Teen Pregnancy Prevention, Opportunity and Responsibility Act, which would help reduce teen pregnancy through education and information programs, as well as positive activities and role models both in school and out of school.
  • Co-sponsored S. Res. 485 expressing the sense of the Senate that Congress should support access to family planning for women regardless of their income to prevent unintended pregnancies.
  • Co-sponsored the Equity in Prescription Insurance and Contraceptive Coverage Act, which would require health plans to provide equitable coverage of prescription contraceptive drugs, devices and services.
  • Co-sponsored the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), which would prohibit, consistent with Roe v. Wade, the interference by the government with a woman's right to choose to bear a child or terminate a pregnancy.
  • Co-sponsored the Prevention First Act which is an omnibus family planning initiative that would expand access to preventive health care services that help reduce unintended pregnancies, lessen the number of abortions and improve access to women's health care.
  •

    109th Floor Action

  • Voted AGAINST Passage of the Child Custody Protection Act which would make it a crime to transport a minor across a state line to obtain an abortion in another state in order to circumvent the parent-notification laws of the minor's home state. There were insufficient protections for incest victims (still require parental consent).
  • Voted FOR the Lautenberg/Menendez Amendment on Teen Pregnancy which would help reduce teen pregnancy by creating a grant program to teach comprehensive sex-education-education that promotes abstinence, but also includes information about contraception-increasing funding for existing after-school programs that provide academic enrichment for at-risk teens, and establishing a demonstration project that funds creative new programs to supplement teen pregnancy prevention education programs in school or after-school.
  • Voted to provide adequate funding for family planning services and continues his 100% support of Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose.
